Some basic Guidelines a Professional must follow

-Be a good listener

-be an effective speaker

-Be an effective communicator generally & get opinions on your effectiveness

-be efficient -be fair -be positive & confident but aware of concern (can-do attitude has limits)

-Talk straight

-Respect the time of others, be timely -be knowledgeable but do not pretend to know what you do not (this is why you have a team)

-make sure people know when you are serious and that you will not accept shit (that’s right, it wasn’t politically correct)

-As for being politically correct and documenting everything……these are only important if you are covering your ass, and that usually happens if you are in the wrong job.

You should document what is required to be documented to assist the business function (which can include legal indemnification or anything else which might affect your bottom line or people’s jobs), that is all. As long as you respect others, you should speak frankly.

Your job as a leader is safe if you get the job done, especially if you get it done well.

Quality, Cost, and delivering benefits in a timely manner.

If you lose your job or if you feel you have to walk on egg-shells because you are scared of offending someone then you either have issues with being a bigot and are scared that your mask will be uncovered ….or something similar (take time off to deal with your personality issues) or you allow the bullshit of the world to control you which will severely limit your effectiveness as a human being let alone a boss.

If you really feel your position requires you to be that guy that emails everything because he can’t get proof of conversations you are working for the wrong company or they think they made a mistake employing you.

The world has enough people who cling to jobs they are not cut out for.
